Cognitive development is the process through which we acquire and enhance our abilities to think, reason, remember, and problem-solve as we grow and mature. It encompasses the advancements in mental processes and skills that help us to understand and interact with people and our environment.
Cognition begins shortly after birth and continues throughout life, but it is most rapid and pronounced during infancy and childhood. The pace at which children develop cognitive abilities may vary and it can be influenced by genetics, experiences, culture and or environment while strengthened and modified through education and support. In this series we begin a conversation around cognitive abilities at various stages.
Beginning at birth, infants begin to explore and understand the world mainly through their senses and motor actions. Touching surfaces, crawling, putting things in their mouths, hearing voices, words, sounds, and music. Simple problem-solving skills and the identification of cause and effect relationships emerge. They develop object permanence which is the understanding that an object continues to exist even when out of sight.
These developing abilities are the seeds of early learning that Dads, moms, families, early childhood educators- the caregiving system collective - nurture to support a child's cognitive growth. How so? Through environment, interaction and intention.
Environment. Ensure home and preschool/childcare offer a clean and nurturing space filled with warmth, love and peace.
Interaction. Ensure verbal and nonverbal interactions with children include PVO’s - Positive Vibes Only. Negative experiences can alt9er development.
Intention. Allow your actions to deliver the message that cognitive development is underway.
Here’s one final thought. Understanding cognitive development helps us to recognize and embrace individual differences, optimize learning experiences, and promote intellectual growth throughout life.
